Behind the Scenes: What Does It Take to Photograph Three Dogs? Have you ever seen a photograph of three dogs sitting beautifully together, looking toward the camera, and wondered:
“How in the world did the Photographer get them to do that?
”Well...let me show you what happens behind the scenes!
When you see the finished portrait, you see three dogs sitting together as though they simply walked into position and posed for the camera. What you don't see is everything that happened before I pressed the shutter.
One Dog Sits. Another Walks Away.
Photographing one dog requires patience. Photographing three dogs requires patience, teamwork, treats—and a good sense of humor!
During this session, we had three very different dogs and three very different ideas about what we were trying to accomplish.
One was ready.
Another needed repositioning.
And just when we thought everyone was together...someone decided to move!
So we tried again! And again!
There were treats. There was coaxing. There was repositioning. There were humans stepping into the photograph and stepping back out.
And yes, there was plenty of laughter.
Your Dogs Don't Have to Be Perfect.
This is something I want dog owners to understand before a photography session:
Your Dogs do not have to Sit Perfectly Still.
They don't have to look at the camera every time.
They don't have to behave like professionally trained dogs.
They simply need to be themselves.
I work with what each dog gives me. Sometimes that means waiting. Sometimes it means changing positions. Sometimes we take a break and start again.
When several dogs are being photographed together, their family becomes part of the team, too. As you can see from these behind-the-scenes photographs, getting three dogs into position can take a little work!
And Then...It Happens.
After all the moving, treats, repositioning and waiting, there comes a moment when everything suddenly falls into place.
Three dogs. Three faces. Three personalities. Click.
That's the photograph.
When you look at the finished portrait, you would never know everything that happened just moments before.
And that's exactly why I wanted to share these behind-the-scenes photographs.
A professional dog photography session isn't about demanding perfection from your dog. It's about patience, preparation, timing and knowing when that wonderful little moment is about to happen.
Don't Apologize for Your Dog.
Sometimes clients worry that their dog isn't cooperating and begin apologizing.
Please don't.
They're being Dogs.
That's what I expect.
Whether I'm photographing one dog, two dogs or an entire furry family, my job is to work with their personalities and capture the expressions, connections and little moments that make them yours.
Because your dog doesn't have to be perfect for photographs.
Your Dog just has to be Your Dog.
And sometimes the photographs that look the most effortless are the ones that took the most patience to create.
